What made Hawaii a popular destination for Chinese immigration in the late 19th century? Apparently nearly 50,000 Chinese men, women and children, mostly from the south, migrated to Hawaii before the Geary Act in 1992; today nearly a third of people in Hawaii have at least some Chinese ancestry.
