The sinking of SS Sultana coincided with the manhunt and death of J. W. Boothe. Thus the tragedy got somewhat buried in the press, even though it is the greatest maritime disaster in U.S. history. Did the story really die so quickly and is that why noone was ever brought to justice for it?
