Encyclopedia Britannica says that Cristo Redentor's foundation stone was laid April 4, 1922, to commemorate the centennial of Brazil's independence from Portugal. Brazil's Independence Day in September 7, 1822. Is Britannica wrong, or was April 4, 1822 some other important date in Brazilian history?
