I've heard that in the Roman Empire, nationwide natural disasters were thought to be divine retribution, and the reigning emperor was typically blamed. Is this true, and if so, why did Marcus Aurelius remain so beloved, despite the fact that his reign saw the devastating "Antonine Plague"?
