Dan Sickles, of Gettysburg fame, was acquitted of the murder of Francis Scott Key's son, Phillip, who was D.A. of Washington D.C., on the grounds of insanity. Had an insanity defense be tried before to no success or was this the first time an insanity defense was ever used?
