Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian patriot who helped unify Italy in 1871, is said to have stressed the need to emancipate slavery in America to Abraham Lincoln and in turn, Garibaldi would offer his political support. Was Garibaldi the tipping point for Lincoln to give the Emancipation Proclamation?
