The Macedonian Phalanx was superseded by the Roman Legion. Pikemen in the late middle ages made all other melee infantry obsolete, and were only superseded in the early 1700s. How did the Macedonian Phalanx and the pikemen of EM Europe differ so as to create such radically different outcomes?
