Le Solitaire (1821; The Recluse) by the Vicomte d'Arlincourt saw many editions and was a Europe-wide sensation translated into German, English (twice!), Dutch, Italian, Danish, Polish, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, and Portuguese by 1824. Why did it fail to make the 19th-c. European novelistic canon?
