The ancient world, and even renaissance world, seems to be full of eunuchs. Was it really regular practice for the many of the most powerful empires in history; ancient Persia, Greece, Egypt, Babylon, Renaissance Italy, etc., to be governed by a bureaucratic class of castrated males?
