In "20,000 Leagues," Verne makes Conseil say of Ned Land, "The lack of wine, bread, and meat is an affront to the dignity of an Anglo-Saxon." Why is wine, bread, and meat racially coded, and why isn't the lack of those things an affront to the French Aronnax?
