There seem to be many instances in the 5th century AD during the fall of the Western Roman Empire of slaves deserting en masse to join the "barbarians" (Goths, Vandals, etc.) and being accepted into their ranks. Was lots of slaves deserting to the join an enemy common in earlier times as well?
