The stereotypical Chinese haircut, the queue, was impossed upon the ethnic Han Chinese by Manchu rulers. If this is the case, why did seemingly most Chinese immigrants to the American West keep this hairstyle? Did American media have an interest in portraying the Chinese in this way?
