In 1912, 2LT George Patton (latterly a general) participated in the Olympic Games and, it seems, came tantalizingly close to a bronze medal. How beneficial was it for the career of US officers to take part in sports competitions, international or otherwise, pre-WW1? Was it expected? Demanded?
