“Here I stop.” In July 1812 Napoleon seriously considered stopping and quartering his army at Vitebsk for the winter, and conquering Russia in 1813. Instead he pushed on to Moscow and disaster. Would the Russian war have played out differently if he had waited? Or was defeat inevitable anyway?
