John of Nikiu narrates that Kubrat, founder and ruler of Old Great Bulgaria in the 7th century was brought up in Constantinople as a Christian. However once he left to rule, it seems the Bolghars remained Tengri. Was it common for hostages groomed to suit another culture to just 'go native'?
