In Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, Jurgis makes reference to one of the corrupt associates of a party boss being a "tenpin-setter" by occupation. Was bowling considered a "lowbrow" or "vice" activity in turn of the century America, and if so, how did that perception evolve and change?
