Ignaz Semmelweis is considered the pioneer of handwashing to prevent the spread of bacteria from person to person. Many women chose to give birth in a midwife ward rather than student-staffed clinics, where Puerperal Fever was 3x deadlier. Is this why at-home delivery was much more common back then?
