The present insurgency in the Sahel/Sahara makes me think of the Eurasian Steppe, and how horse nomads used it as a strategic asset when fighting settled governments. Has the Sahel/Sahara historically been used as a strategic military asset for militaries in a similar way to the Eurasian steppe?
