Explorers from Italy like Columbus, Vespucci and Cabot became famous explorers in service of foreign crowns. Even minor explorers (da Noli or Cadamosto) served others but not for Venice or Genoa. Why didn't the maritime Italian states end up setting their own expeditions beyond the Mediterranean?
