In the 2017 Netflix mini-series “Gallipoli” one of the main characters is twice promoted in the field due to his bravery and being ‘mentioned in dispatches’. Was it commonplace for Commonwealth troops in WWI to be promoted as a way to acknowledge bravery as opposed to receiving a citation or medal?
