Contemporary Istanbul consists of land on both sides of the Bosphorus. The centre of old Konstantinniye or Constantinople was in the European side. Was the Asian side of the Bosphorus, like Chalcedon, considered an integrated part of the city back then, or was it considered a separate settlement?
