Contemporary social criticism is often framed by reference to future beliefs. E.g, “My beliefs may be unpopular now, but history will vindicate me,” or “Future generations won't believe we did X.” Did older societies discuss social issues this way, or is this lens/rhetorical device uniquely modern?
