The espresso machine was invented in 1902; by the 40s espresso was so dominant that the "Americano" was invented to approximate drip coffee for US GIs. What accounts for the rapid adoption of espresso in Italy, and why did it stay relatively rare outside Southern Europe until the late 20th century?
