Until very recent times, Greek-speaking communities existed across the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. Did Greeks living in 19th century Egypt, Romania, Jerusalem, and the Pontus speak dialects that modern Greek citizens would understand, or had they diverged beyond any intelligibility?
