Toynbee wrote of cultures that die out when they do not reinvent themselves. Prior to the Holocaust, Jews and Judaism was one he believed would die out (focus on Jewish identity after the Holocaust renewed the culture). How tightly knit was the culture of Jews prior to the Holocaust?
