In 1883 (Paramount+ series), a group traveling from Fort Worth to Oregon is told to take the train, rather than going by wagon, because of the danger. They reply that the train is "too expensive." Was it cheaper to cross the country by wagon than steam train? If so, why, and what were the costs?
