The founder of ETA (Txabi Etxebarrieta) couldn't speak or understand Basque. Presumably therefore the lingua franca of the Basque separatist movement was Castillian, and if so wasn't this a bit awkward? Was there ever a divide between Basque speakers and non-Basque speakers within the movement?
