When did people start to become aware that humanity has gradually been improving technologically? Were the Romans(and others) aware that humanity once lived in caves, or at the very least at a lower level of sophistication? Did they then extrapolate to the future?

I heard there was a time in British/American history when women were considered the horny ones incapable of sexual control and men were the chaste moral gatekeepers, ie the reverse of current gender beliefs. Did this flip happen, when, why, and did it happen multiple times?
