Today we commemorate the Seven Holy Maccabees. Seven Brothers of Israel, as well as their mother, accepted gruesome death at the hands of the pagan king Antiochus IV rather than forsake God's Law. Their martyrdom is recounted in 2 Maccabees 7, one of the deuterocanonical Scriptures.
