The Battle of Nile(Aboukir Bay) begins in 1798 during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, with the British led by Horatio Nelson, routing the French fleet, which lost 9 ships, and around 5000 killed. And it made the British dominant in the Mediterranean, ending a 3 month naval campaign.

Nicolas-Jacques Conte was born on this day on 4 August 1755. A painter and engineering genius, Conte was one of the savants who joined Napoleon during the Egyptian expedition and is credited for forming the first airborne battalion and inventor of the modern pencil.
