Portugal was the biggest slave trader with over 5 Million slaves from 1501 to 1866. However the Mârques de Pombal abolished slavery in 1761.Why did the government allow slave trading to still be a thing ? And why did the numbers suddenly decline after 1850 ?

Pakistan is a nuclear-armed state that holds credible elections, relies on highly-educated scientists/engineers, and has a court system where decent often prevails. But it also has cruel and primitive laws, ill-educated mobs out for blood, and corrupt politicians. How did this mishmash come about?

Was porn produced in and/or by the Soviet Union? Did they ever use porn as a form of agitprop internally? Did they ever use porn as part of their active measures campaign in America in the 60s and 70s?

Why did parents in the early 1900s give children initials rather than complete names in the south? My great uncle had to legally give himself a first and last name as an adult because before they time his first name was L and his second one was R.
