When and why did pasta become practically universal in Italian cuisine? What caused it to be so popular in Italy while rare or practically nonexistent in the traditional cuisines of other European nations?

I was reading an article on the Don religion in ancient Tibet, I did some reading up on it but couldn't find a large comprehensive answer to what it was. I do know that it was some what absorbed into Buddhism, but I don't understand what made it different to Buddhism. Could someone explain?
