I was reading US Civil War-era newspapers from Tennessee and the papers seem to imply that secession was a decision made by public referendum. Did ordinary citizens cast their vote to secede from the Union? I always thought it was politicians.

The Moroccan traveler Ibn Battutah visited Oman around 1330 and wrote that the sultan (Abu Muhammad Ibn Nabhan) would regularly give his blessing and protection to young women who wanted to engage in “debauchery.” Do we know any more about this practice? What was really going on here?
