On June 15, 1991, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines expelled 4 km³ of volcanic ash. At Cubi Point Naval Air Station, 40 km away, 10-15 cm of ash accumulated on a World Airways DC-10, shifting its center of gravity and causing its nose to tip up.
