TIL McLaren used an extra brake pedal (left) in 1997/8 that gave the drivers greater control during corners. It shaved off close to half a second per lap. At the 1998 Melbourne opener both Hakkinen & Coulthard lapped the entire field after which Ferrari protested and it was banned from the next race
