My thermostat will not run the fan or unit on AUTO fan. I have restarted it and put new batteries in it. When I switch it to auto fan the set temperature disappears so the unit stops running. My house didn't have central ac and heat till 3 years ago. Do I need a new thermostat?

Heatpump has an intermittent leak. Technician cannot find the leak and is saying it is probably in the lines which are behind finished walls. Is it remotely worth it to run new lines vs replacing the entire system?
