TIL Col. Shaw carried a famous sword into his final battle, depicted in the film Glory (1989). Thought to be stolen by a Confederate soldier after his death, it was actually retrieved by one of his black soldiers. The sword was kept in the Shaw family attic for over 150 years and is now at MASSHIST.

TIL the planet Mercury has a comet-like tail 15-million miles (24 million kms) long. The tail is made of sodium atoms blasted off of the surface of the planet by the Sun and small meteorite impacts. The tail is very faint, invisible to the naked eye.

TIL in 1906 con man Wilhelm Voigt posed as a Prussian military officer and took a group of troops by train to the town of Köpenick, arresting the mayor and stealing 4000 German marks. He was viewed as a folk hero and the Kaiser later pardoned him. A statue of him stands outside the city hall.
