Non-ferrous metal object found in my dad's old Craftsman box. Nearly 5 inches long, flattened tips, and some sort of rubber on the shaft.

What is this? It's made of clay (it smells 😂), quite weighty for the size, found on a beach in south east England by a collapsed wall with loads of 18-19th century pottery and bottles. Mudlarking community have suggested an old drop spindle whorl?
