How did Japan's interwar/WWII engineers view their work and Japan's industrial capabilities, in comparison to the West? Did any doubt among them have an impact on the war?

I'm looking for primary or secondary sources on Japan between the World Wars, preferably relating to their military/politics or aviation/industry/business. I got ahold of "Eagles of Mitsubishi" and want to try to make some sort of project out of it. Any suggestions?
