How did Japanese culture become unified across the archipelago? (Or is/was it?) Japan experts, what do you make of the idea that Japanese culture is shaped by its agricultural roots?

Especially as it relates to globalization, the week's theme and, I'm guessing, a theme of Bush's presidency?
