I know that Pre-Columbian America (more broad than we usually like but also the flair) wasn't devoid of notable technologies but was "scientist" an occupation in any Native American societies? If not, why? If so, how did Native American scientists compare to the great "Western" or Islamic polymaths?

In another sub (to refute the idea of a lack of individualism), someone described Japan as being "the civilization that has most rebellions in human history and perhaps the most vibrant hermit culture in the pre-industrial world." Is that accurate?
