How true is it that the UK, and other European colonizers, purposely drew boundaries of conquered territories in a way to keep local tribes infighting thus making them easier to control and less of a threat?

Often in movies we see warriors/soldiers practicing against each other with real swords. How accurate is this? Wouldn't this be exceedingly dangerous?
