Steam from boiling water is obvious but was evaporation at room temperature something that was always understood or was it discovered later? Did ancient people know that when a puddle seemingly disappeared it went into the air?

Part of the reason Henry VIII tried so hard to get a male heir was because he thought his daughters might not be accepted as queen. When Edward VI died, was there any faction pushing to skip the women in favor of a male relative? If not, why were the women more accepted than Henry thought?

[META] The FAQ has a section on "Building the Egyptian pyramids" and there are lots of questions on "How they built the pyramids" that link there. But as far as I can tell, none get into construction techniques. Can we get a question for the FAQ on pyramid construction techniques?
