Wouldn’t a survey of a random sample of Americans (or any other country) essentially solve most of the mysteries surrounding COVID-19?

In Michio Kaku's book Hyperspace, he mentions "symmetries" in various theories of physics. It's obvious he isn't referring to elementary, geometric symmetry, so what is he referring to?

One theory of why animals wither and die unlike plants is that we pass on our genes most successfully when we raise our young and then stop consuming resources. However, wouldn't this theory hold true for plants as well, resulting in withering and dying plants?
