Calais was English for centuries and AFAIK had a widely English-speaking population for some of that time. Did it ever acquire an "anglicised" name or pronunciation, and if so, when did it fall out of use?

A backfiring car masking or being mistaken for a gunshot is a staple of crime fiction. I don't believe I, at 41, have ever actually heard one. What is a "backfire", how common was it, when did it stop being a thing cars did and was it really that easily mistaken for a gunshot?
