The Duke of Devonshire has his family seat at Chatsworth in Derbyshire and owns chunks of land all over Derbyshire and Yorkshire. But not in Devon. Were titles like "Duke of X" and "Count of Y" originally more firmly tied to a particular parcel of land, and when did that change?
