Even though cartridges, repeating rand breech-loading rifles existed during the US civil war, why did the two sides still use muzzle-loading muskets which were much slower to reload and fire?

Why were the activities of many European powers in Asia, the Middle-East and Africa called Colonialism when they did not set up any colonies. Wouldn't Imperialism be a much better term?
