What are the earliest descriptions of the Roman Pilum in the battlefield? Was it particular novel at the time? Did the enemy fear the pilum? Just how effective was it as a weapon in general?

At what point, and under which emperor, was Rome at its largest and most stable. Border maps regarding its size show an impressive, expansive empire, but I know the borders were in constant flex. How much control did they really have at these furthest reaches, and for how long?

Following the American Civil War was anything done to transition slaves into life as free individuals? Also, if we had offered freed slaves land grants to relocate out West and just got them out of the South entirely after the war would that have improved our race relations today do you think?

Was there a moment in WWII where it was truly on edge whether or not the Axis Powers would conquer Europe? I feel with American and Soviet involvement it was really only a question of how much of Europe would be leveled before they were defeated.
