I remember reading somewhere that the pikes of the Macedonian phalanx's rear ranks helped to deflect incoming arrow fire. Is this true, are there any records of this?

Often times in war films or shows, there are scenes with commanding officers discussing strategic plans and referencing a map. These maps are usually very large and very detailed, intricately detailing the landscape for dozens of miles around. What type of maps are these?
