An often said slogan about the Great War was that it was carnage "on a never before seen scale". How did the soldiers, generals, politicians, etc of the day cope? Did they understand the scope of the carnage in the first place?

In the show Knightfall, commanders in battle would have their soldiers "break" to allow enemies to fall into their ranks, where they could be dispatched easily. Is this an actual tactic that we know was used in high medieval warfare?
